Jeff Halper: „Decolonizing Israel, Liberating Palestine“

Jeff Halper’s appeal for book translation
07.10.2021

Jeff Halper, the Director of ICAHD, describes the importance of translating his important book ‚Decolonizing Israel, Liberating Palestine‘ from English into Arabic.

The Israeli Committee Against House Demolition
Restisting Apartheid, Building a Shared Democracy

The “story” of this project – why it’s important to support us – is simple and straightforward. Critical political texts, particularly on an issue like Palestinian liberation, are seldom available to the public, even to grassroots activists. Among the Palestinian and wider Arab public, where relatively few critical books are translated from English and other languages, access to cutting-edge political analysis is even more restricted.

Getting books written in Hebrew by anti-colonial Israeli writers but translated into Arabic is crucial for building the kind of political solidarity and joint struggle necessary for the creation of a single democracy in historic Palestine, just as translating books by Palestinian and Arab writers is essential if Israelis are to grasp Palestinians needs for freedom and a new society. Halper’s Decolonizing Israel, Liberating Palestine was written in conjunction with the One Democratic State Campaign (ODSC), a Palestine-led initiative to free Palestinians from Zionist/Israeli colonization and occupation while also offering equal rights to Israeli Jews in a shared democracy. Sharing such texts, analyses and political programs is key to building the foundations for a joint Palestinian/Israeli struggle for liberation.

Foreword by Nadia Naser-Najjab, Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Exeter University.

  • Awad Abdelfattah, former Secretary General of the Palestinian Balad/Tajamu Party and the Chair of the One Democratic State Campaign (ODSC), writes of the book: “For many years various groups of Palestinians and anti-Zionists who embrace the idea of one democratic state in historic Palestine have been struggling to promote the settler colonialism perspective as an analytical frame for understanding Israel and its repressive policies, and consequently to return to the Palestinians’ struggle of liberating the entire country from Israeli colonial rule. I see in this book a qualitative contribution to the one state idea. Jeff Halper, a co-founder of the One Democratic State Campaign which we, along other Palestinians and Israeli Jews, launched early 2018, suggests a road map of how to get from here to there. As far as I know this is the first serious contribution in drawing a path to the project of liberating Palestine. It is also one that will compel the many one-state activists to engage in the issue of practicality following indispensable analysis produced by intellectuals like Jeff.”
  • Haidar Eid, an Associate Professor of Postcolonial and Postmodern Literature at Gaza’s al-Aqsa University and the author of Countering the Palestinian Nakba: One State for All, says about the book: “Jeff Halper’s Decolonizing Israel, Liberating Palestine: Zionism, Settler Colonialism and the Case for One Democratic State is vital at time when we must imagine and discuss alternative futures for the inhabitants of historic Palestine and the millions of Palestinian refugees scattered all over the world. This book helps us to see light at the end of the tunnel.”
  • Ilan Pappe, Professor of History and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter and a prominent anti-colonial Israeli says: “In this concise and informative book, Jeff Halper makes a powerful and convincing case for decolonizing historical Palestine. A must read for anyone looking for fresh ideas of how to end the long and bloody conflict in Palestine.”
  • Avi Shlaim, Emeritus Professor of International Relations at Oxford and author of The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World, writes: “In this brave, thought-provoking and highly original book, Halper presents both a searching critique of Zionist settler colonialism and a compelling case for one democratic state with equal rights for all its citizens. It is a remarkable example of thinking outside the box. In the current stalemate in Israel-Palestine his ideas merit a wide readership and serious discussion.”
  • Richard Falk, Professor Emeritus of International Law at Princeton University and former UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian Human Rights, comments: Halper’s book is “Indispensable reading for all seeking a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis. Halper not only envisions the outcome but with informed lucidity, political sophistication, and moral integrity depicts the path from here to there. What is most unexpected, given present realities, is that this manages to be a book of realistic hope, the finest work of advocacy scholarship I have ever read.”
